I think there's only a limited amount of 'research' we can do into good narrative. You can make anything into a good narrative if you deliver it properly, and some of the very best are those that defy so called 'conventions'.

So I don't think there is much we can do in terms of narrative research that would be relevant. Good narrative comes from creativity. It's like with music, you can study musical conventions and theory all you like, but it is what you do with it that determines it's quality, and sometimes ignoring so called rules is the best course of action as well.
